Googling localnet

February 25, 2008

It’s not a replacement for Google. It’s a localnet Google, an ideal tool for security/systems admins.

Splunk

Splunking made my log analyzing and local file searching easy. This web-based portal provides index all our host data and search with our favorite mechanisms including regular expressions and etc. The usage can be expanded to make alert and reports based on our own threads hold. And it’s not limited to use only the localhost but scalable across other servers.

Happy Splunking……….

GNS3……… it’s AMAZING…

February 11, 2008

GNS3, another amazing software in Open Source world. Even though the authors say, this is for trainers and students, I found GNS3 as enterprise-class, quality software. All credits for GNS3 team !!!

Simple installation as follows.. some prerequisites must be met before.

Most of the latest rpms of prerequisites for Fedora 8 (;my platform), click here or go,

http://mirrors.cat.pdx.edu/fedora/linux/updates/testing/8/i386/

and then,

sajith@sajith-lpt$ wget http://pfe.epitech.net/frs/download.php/597/GNS3-0.3.2-src.tar

sajith@sajith-lpt$ tar xvf GNS3-0.3.2-src.tar

sajith@sajith-lpt$ cd GNS3-0.3.2

sajith@sajith-lpt$ ./gns &

That’s all..

To run the amazing part of GNS3, “Emulation Mode”, you need Dynamips binary. Cisco 7200 simulator binary can be downloaded here. You must provide Cisco IOS for Emulation Mode to be activated. If you’re not a Cisco customer, try these Cisco IOS binaries,

ftp://218.1.71.179/download/Cisco/Cisco%20IOS/

username: ftpnew4

password: KD8YFN57LD

Try all these… it’s AMAZING…….

WANTED

December 21, 2007

Here in Sri Lanka and around the world, ICT is becoming one the MOST WANTED daily practices.

Considering the facts, we, some young professionals, are going to organize a series of FREE IT educational programs targeting the youth sector. The target age sector will be 16-28 The events will focus on the daily practices of ICT.

We have taken some initiatives and in a process of gathering physical/logical resources.

Organization of such events introduces us some challenges and troubles. More than the resources like HR and Funds, we’re facing a trouble of capturing some motivated brains for this purpose.

If you’re willing to give a drop of your highly motivated physical/logical capacity for this FREE program in your free time… You are Very Welcome..

Wiki; Oracle’s

December 20, 2007

Oracle’s wiki, a community powered wiki backed by Oracle is doing well these days. It seems that it will be one of world’s largest wikis. I noticed some bugs around and some of are quite interesting.

When I first logged in to Oracle Wiki for the first time, a few weeks back, I invited one of colleagues to join with the wiki. both of us were in the same sub-net and using the same http-proxy. When he logged into Oracle wiki for the first time in his life; he was logged into Oracle wiki automatically into my account.

ohhh.. God.. can you believe this?

I have reported the issue to Oracle and they informed me they would redirect it to Wetpaint.

AIR

October 3, 2007

A featuring cross platform run time Adobe AIR was installed recently. It encourages web devs to use their exciting web knowledge on HTML, Javascript or Ajax to develop desktop Internet apps.

This post also submitted through AirPress 0.3 beta. And recently released Adobe Media Player also runs top of AIR run time.

Adobe Air introduces a good platform independent architecture for desktop Internet apps.

Current version of AirPress lacks of some features provided by WordPress’s blog post feature. But however it makes my life easier to upload a new post locally/quickly.

chroot was broken?

September 28, 2007

When I was digging Slashdot, I was directed to an interesting discussion regarding “Abusing chroot“.  Alan Cox says,

If you are within chroot jail and capable of chroot(), you can chdir to its root, then chroot() to subdirectory and you’ve got cwd outside of your new root. After that you can chdir all way out to original root. Again, this is standard behaviour. Changing it will not yield any security improvements, so kindly give that a rest.

The full discussion is here..

Datasaab

September 25, 2007

There were two unbelievable things in Sweden.

One was the sun. I was able to see the sun till 22:00 hr and again early in the morning 5:00 hr. That’s wonderful. That was a magic behind early-summer.

And the second was IT-ceum.
I was lucky to visit one Swedish computer museum, IT-ceum. Datasaab was one of surprised gadgets it had. Datasaab’s history dates back to 1950s. An early Swedish computer(vacuum tubes) company was behind the scene.
In the early 1990s, a society called Datasaabs Vanner (Friends of Datasaab) was found. They have published several documents regarding Swedish computer history focusing Linkoping and Datasaab.
And there was a 10MB hard disk. Believe me.. about 1m*1m*1m in size.
Some photos can be found here.

And RMS was there, at Linkoping University. Some photos are here.
